Water Filters and Water Quality

Look no further than the debacle in Detroit and you will know that water filtration is not a luxury but a necessity. Now numerous individuals from across the country are worried about the wellbeing of their faucet water swing to water filter frameworks for enhancing the quality and taste. The question is – considering the cost – does your water truly need to be filtered?

For the most part, the answer is a resounding yes. It is safe to say that if you are living in the U.S. and have watched any reports on Detroit, you are worried about the water quality in your home. If not that, you certainly want to do something to improve the taste of the water that is coming from your kitchen spigot. In the first place, you don’t have to consider whether you truly require a water filtering system in your home, trust us, you do. Although the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) insists that more than 90 percent of the water supply in the United States is safe to drink from the tap, this should be of little comfort to you. The testing is far from foolproof.

You will need to consider a water decontamination framework to enhance water quality in your homes for you and your family’s wellbeing, not to mention special health related cases. Cases that may very well go undetected for years may include several server situations. Tests may miss an abnormal state of lead in their water as well as contaminants (such as radon) in water from a well. For a person with a weak immune system from having HIV or is undergoing chemotherapy, this could be a lethal situation.

Water filtering frameworks can take out contaminants that can make you become ill or influence the taste or feel of your water supply. Water filtering frameworks have the capacity to eliminate microbes including infections, microscopic organisms and parasites. Contaminants like lead, radon, radium, nitrates, arsenic, pesticides and byproducts of cleansing products have all been discovered in unfiltered water sources, and so it is essential that you have one installed.

Don’t think that you are limited. There is an array of water filtration options. There are several variables to consider when settling on a particular water filtration system. You need to seek out a water filter device or system that has been confirmed to meet the requirements of the acceptable water quality set by the EPA. It also needs to meet your particular needs. Not each filtration system can remove each and every single contaminant that may be present in your water system. In case you’re worried about a specific contaminant, similar to the microorganisms or radon, discover the water channel framework that works best at expelling the specific contaminant from your water supply.

There are two main options you will need to consider when setting up your system. A properly functioning water filtration system can be located at the location of usage (where it filters the water at the fixture it is connected to), or at the point of entry. Filtration that occurs at the point of entry happens when the water supply enters into your home. With this system in place you are able to have sanitized water at each spigot inside of the home. The system may incorporate a bit of material that captures contaminants like microorganisms and chemicals in the water, or it may eliminate or demolish contaminants in other ways.

Entry point water filters include several options. Water conditioners, for example, is a system that uses a purifying setup that eliminates the need for individual devices at each faucet. For most, this is the best option since not everyone is going to take the to time to specifically go to a designated location for water, to fill ice trays, or other uses. Tap water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium, which can make the water hard. In this case, you must have a water filter that utilizes sodium or potassium particles to supplant the calcium and magnesium particles. This will make the water much softer.

The purpose of utilization water channel choices include various options that will target specific needs to make sure you chose the correct option. These include distillers that basically eliminate the contaminant containing water vapor from the drinking water. This water filtration process uproots a significant number of the minerals normally found in water, yet might change the taste. Reverse osmosis units channel water through a film, utilizing weight that hauls out chemicals and organisms. These frameworks utilize a considerable measure of water, yet they do not uproot all microorganisms that cause malady and a great deal of chemicals. This is an amazingly successful framework for sanitizing water. Filtered water pitchers are another alternative that come furnished with a replaceable channel that traps chemicals and different contaminants. You essentially fill the pitcher from your tap and hold it upwards while the water moves through the channel. These are moderate and simple to utilize and will also enhance the elements of faucet water.

On the off chance you aren’t prepared to purchase a water purging framework, there are different approaches you may be ready to take that we wouldn’t suggest, such as trying to cure a few drinking water issues without a water filter. Yet this may work as a temporary solution until a better alternative can be made. When turning on water that hasn’t been flowing for a couple of hours, turn on the cold-water tap and let it keep running for a few minutes. This can flush lead out of the water. You can also boil water for 1 to 3 minutes, and then place it in a spotless pitcher inside the cooler. This ought to execute microorganisms, such as cryptosporidium. The last option is to place your faucet water in a pitcher or another compartment and refrigerate it. This can enhance the essence of excessively chlorinated water.

The point is you do need some form of filtration for your water. In case you’re worried about the quality of your water-as we all should be- you can find a way to enhance water quality at home and ensure that what you’re drinking is healthy for you and your loved ones. When you make conscious choices that pertain to the water quality issues you have to address for your home, you can locate the best water filter option and sleep easy.

Water

In 2014, scientists at the University of New Mexico and Northwestern University found evidence suggesting vast reserves of water may exist hundreds of miles underground. Their experiments point to material in the transition zone, which is about 410 miles beneath the surface of the Earth. A kind of melting that changes water on the molecular level occurs at such a depth and the scientists’ high-pressure experiments suggest the transition zone could possess oceans of H2O dissolved in high-pressure rock.

Their findings may change the way we look at our planet’s water cycle and explain how water got here. Some theories had suggested the role of icy comets hitting Earth was central to the existence of water on our planet. These new findings may alter such theories.  Considering the possible subterranean origin of water in oceans, rivers, and above us in the clouds, it is a wonder how things work in the universe.

The icy comet theory of how water came to this planet may be an extension of the theory explaining where iron comes from. Iron is made in the center of massive stars. It is such a strong element. Only the pressure of massive stars can create it. After that star explodes in a supernova, the element iron shoots out in the form of meteorites. The theory goes that some such meteorites found their way to Earth.

Consider both water and iron. These are two things essential for our blood. Iron is essential because of its role in Hemoglobin, and water is essential to keep blood at an appropriate consistency for our well being. It is a wonder to think something as essential for human life, iron in Hemoglobin, was at one time made at the center of a distant star. There is something awe-inspiring about some scientific theories. And to extend that theory to water had seemed logical until the subterranean theory was published.

These substances (iron, water) that are so essential on a micro level, are also central to our identity as a species. Our ability or failure to navigate water defines so much of human history.

In just the last century, it was water that prevented the explosive expansion of Nazi Germany to halt at Britain. The island-nation defended itself from aerial bombardment as preparations by the Nazis to cross from mainland Europe over the water to Britain dragged on. Here, iron is being used to spill blood, not make it.

And it was later from water that Britain and her allies would strike on D-Day by storming the beaches of Normandy and marking a turning point in the Second World War.

In earlier times, a storm saved Japan from a naval invasion by the Mongols in 1274. The massive typhoons made the water voyage of Kublai Khan’s troops impossible. The Japanese called such storms “Kamikaze” after the words for “divine wind”.

Water covers most of the planet. The old joke is since there is more ocean than land in the world our planet should be called Water, and not Earth. There is some wisdom to this. How much of our economy is dependent on too much water in the atmosphere or too little. A hurricane can overwhelm cities, and a snowstorm can decide a sports championship. Hundreds of years ago, it was the ability to cross the Atlantic that determined the destinies of empires.

And if you think the age of exploration is over, think again. As polar ice caps melt, there is an international fight brewing over who owns the Arctic waterways. Russia in recent years sent a nuclear submarine beneath the ice of the North Pole and placed a canister containing the Russian flag. Canada laughed off such outdated modes of territorial claim and asserted the North Pole is within international water. But previously frozen areas are becoming navigable and ships are increasingly able to travel in the Arctic; the United States contends many of these new unfrozen zones are international waters. Denmark is also interested in the potential for new shipping lanes in the arctic north, especially as it relates to Greenland and Hans Island. Perhaps an epic hockey tournament at the North Pole will help resolve matters. (And if that is the case, then Sweden and Norway better become involved, too.)

But let’s return to the new findings about the origin of water on our planet. If indeed the water in present-day rivers, lakes, and oceans was spewed out in some form through the lava of the earth, there is a remarkable poetry to it. It could mean that the earth sweats.

Impurities in Water

We all know water filters are supposed to remove all of the impurities in the water with a sort of “sand filter”, yet each company that sells the “number one” leading product which is the best out there, comes up with new ones a few years later with the same sales pitch. So how do we know who to trust and which filters really are the best? Should we just buy bottled water? One thing a lot of people do not realize is that most bottled water is acidic. You can find this out by getting an hp tester, or watching a YouTube video.

The main thing you want from your water filter is to remove the most common contaminates that our water systems are not capable of doing. These contaminates include Toxic Medals, Additives such as fluoride, chlorine and a few others, pesticides and herbicides, bacteria, viruses, and the list goes on. Also, you want to buy a filter that’s cartridge won’t have to be replaced every two or three months. This will get expensive, and in the long run, you will probably have spent more money on the cartridges than the product itself was worth.

Buying a water filter, where do we start, do we go by the “top selling brands”, ask friends, read reviews? Those are all good places to start. So let’s review some of the “top brands” of water filters and see why they are considered the best.  “Brita Filters” are a common water filter we hear of quite a bit. The unit itself is inexpensive for most people, but they inform you right from the beginning, “replace every two months or after so many gallons for best results” not a good marketing strategy, or product in my opinion.  And that’s just a pitcher filter, not one that goes on your faucet, or for the entire household.

Although there are similarities with the pitcher filters and faucet filter systems, faucet filters are said to refine the water a little better. The drawbacks are pretty much the same. Frequent replacements, more money, and don’t remove that many contaminants. At $10-$20 a filter, say every 100 gallons later, you could easily go through that much water in a month or two depending on the size of your household. Money pit!

Gravity fed water filters seem to have good reviews, and you can even adjust them to your specific needs. They do not require electricity and they remove most of the more common contaminants such as, pharmaceuticals, by-products, VOC’s and more.  One of the best Gravity Fed brands is the “Berky” because it is known for trapping the contaminants right at the surface of the carbon filter. Another good Gravity Fed water filter is the “ProPur”, I would personally recommend this brand for the simple fact that you can scrub the filter clean and reuse it, you will actually save money if you go this route! These Filters have high certifications and actually test for taste, lead, and makes sure toxins aren’t leaked into the water. This is where the “ProPur” filter benefits over the “Berky Filters”.

Reverse Osmosis Filters, are known to take up to about an hour to filter one gallon of water, and the filters need to be replaced regularly. This would be a filter I personally would not even consider buying. So, moving on.

Bottled water is not much different than tap water and the plastics from the bottle itself can contaminate the water. It’s cheaper just to drink your tap, since there isn’t much difference between the two anyways, other than a pretty label of running “spring” water over a mountain. And if you care about the environment, plastic bottles are a no go. They’re so easy to just throw down, for most people. I personally wait for a trash can but a lot of people really do not care.

Different states have different water, contaminates that are in Texas water won’t be in Oklahoma water. Have your water tested if that is possible for you, then research and choose a water filter that eliminates those certain containments. Also, make sure that the filter does not have to be replaced on a two-month basis. If that is not an option for you then choose a system that has a filter that has to be replaced less often. Try not to go just by months but also go by how many gallons the filter will support. If you have a large family, make sure that is on your top list of considerations.

The speed of which the filter works is another factor, but that will depend on what type of system you decide to go with. Counter top systems are known to take up to 1-5 hours to filter just 1 gallon of water, now if you’re not a big water drinker and it’s just you and one other person, then that isn’t such a bad deal. Just remember that one of the most important things is the budget, how often you can afford to replace the filter, and how much the filters for that specific system cost. Make sure you have the model number as well. A lot of companies distribute the same name brand, with slightly different variations, so go by the model number, as well as the brand name.

Filters that have electronic indicators are a major plus, they will let you know when it is time to replace the filter, instead of you having to guess how many gallons you’ve used or how many months you’ve had it running or in use.

If you are a “go green” all natural type, then the review on the “Aquasana” water filter will hold up to your standards. Aquasana is Latin for “water to heal”. They go off course of the typical government guidelines, which is beneficial for us because that means that fewer traces of harmful chemicals get past the filter. This specific brand of water filtering is more expensive than the rest of the more common brands. But, the technology and the benefits are well worth the money.

If you are more concerned with the PH levels of the water, alkaline versus acidic, “Kangen” machines are the best route to go. They have so many health and mental benefits. This device does, in fact, filter your tap water, but they also produce ionized alkaline and acidic waters through electrolysis. These waters can be used for various purposes, including drinking, cooking, which will make your food healthier and will remove the toxins and pesticides that are sprayed on our fruits and vegetables. It is a beauty enhancer, the “beauty water” is an amazing toner, and cleaning, the acidic cleaning water kills more germs than the leading household brands!

Water is essential for overall health, and having a water filter helps to eliminate bacteria pesticides, and many other materials that we haven’t even heard of or even think could actually be in our water. The key feature of a water filter is how many stages of filtration it has. More stages mean the more filtration. The filtering systems range from one to nine stages. A one stage filter system has a deionization stage and obviously, won’t clean your water near as good as a nine stage filtrations system. A nine stage filtering system has more than one osmosis membrane, three deionization cartridges, a sediment filter, carbon filter and a booster pump. So it definitely seems like the nine-part filter is the best way to go.

Why Install Water Filters in your Home?

It is not uncommon to find people debating about whether or not they should install water filters in their homes. The truth is most people who do not have water filters in their homes do not know the real value of having them. And you can’t blame them; the sheer research you have to do to make sure you get the right water filters for your home can be overwhelming. All the same, if you are presented with the information you need to make an informed decision about a water filter system, you owe it to yourself to take action. This article is meant to do exactly that. So, the first question is why you need water filters installed at your residence.

Chlorine has health risks

For the majority of people, it is easier to not think much about the water we drink, lest we find out some hidden truths that would make us uncomfortable or reluctant to drink the water we’ve been drinking for ages. Yet, it is important to know that most of the water we are served up by city water companies does not meet the threshold for clean water. In a number of cities, people happily drink mineral water that has lithium in it and tap water full of chlorine. And this is where the problem lies.

Disinfecting water, using chlorine is nothing more than bleaching it. You know this is what nearly all cities do. Chlorine is helpful in ridding the water of microorganisms that could make you sick. Chlorine also brings with it other risks that you ought to know about. Taking chlorine-filled water can cause rectal and bladder cancer. That is why many cities today are rethinking its use in the process of making water safe for drinking.

Chloramines have health risks too

A good number of city authorities are switching to chloramines. Chloramines form when you mix chlorine with ammonia as you treat water. The main difference between chlorine and chloramines in this process is that while chlorine often dissipates as it moves through water pipes, chloramines do not. They stay active as the water travels and even long after you’ve drunk the water. As a result, chloramines are able to more effectively kill disease-causing microorganisms in drinking water.

But the use of chloramines is in no way a better option. Just like chlorine, use of chloramines has its own risks. It could cause a number of problems in your body. Some of the issues that have been linked to the use of chloramines include anemia, bladder cancer, kidney problems, reproductive challenges, liver problems and problems with the central nervous system. The drinking in your home is putting you at risk of developing these health complications.

Excess fluoride has side effects

Now, imagine this; chlorine and chloramines are not the only elements to worry about in the water you drink. A number of cities also add fluoride to the water. This is said to help the dental health of the children who drink this water. And yes, they have been doing this for decades. While fluoride’s presence in water may be helpful to dental health in the short term, numerous studies have confirmed that indeed, fluoride has a negative impact on the human body. It has been linked with increased risk of gum disease, bladder cancer liver disease, kidney disease, and thyroid dysfunction. Other fluoride-linked health complications include bone disease (particularly fluorosis), endocrine imbalance, genetic defects, and disorders in the nervous system.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) notes that taking it excess fluoride, regardless of its source, is bad for the body, especially children. The excess fluoride could cause dental fluorosis in children whose teeth are in the developing stage underneath the gums. That makes small children the most susceptible to falling sick.

Drinking water also has traces of heavy metals, pesticides and pharmaceuticals

There have been many instances where traces of heavy metals, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals have been found in drinking water. Lead is perhaps the most common heavy metal that often finds its way to the water we drink. A report by the National Academy of Sciences indicates that the deposits of thirty-nine pesticides or the products created when they break down have been spotted in the groundwater of over 30 states in the United States and Canadian provinces. It is sad that people are trying so hard to grow and eat organic food without knowing that the pesticides they are trying to avoid are already in the water they drink.

Water filters can successfully deal with these challenges

Water filters are designed to help you eliminate all these problems. A water filter system has four stages that use reverse osmosis to filter your water removing all these substances. When you install a water filter system, you stop worrying about drinking water infested with worms, chemicals, cysts, lead, chlorine, fluoride asbestos, chloramines and even bacteria. The system also adds the necessary minerals that will not have negative effects on your health. These include iodine, manganese, phosphorus, silicon, boron, and selenium, to name but a few. The sources of food of the modern society do not have many of these minerals.

Choosing the right water filters – what to look out for

Remember to look for water filters that have the ability to filter both chlorine and chloramines. Many, which successfully filter chlorine, are not built to filter chloramines as well. Make sure the water filter you choose can do that. When you have finally decided on the water filters you want for your home, you can look for them online and talk to your plumber and have him install them for you.

It is advisable to use under sink water filtration systems because counter top ones clog up your counter space. But that is a matter of personal preference. But whatever you do, make sure you make good this information; get a water filter system installed in your house. It is your first step to avoiding the health complications that the available drinking water could bring your way in the long term.
